Choosing your therapist

Picture

Most people don't care about all of those really annoying and long looking initials after our names.  Truth be told, those initials, while annoying, do protect you by letting you know that your therapist is licensed and qualified to provide counseling.  All professional therapists must have a license and at least have a master's degree.  Below you will find a list of the most common questions that we have when we are looking for a good therapist.
Will I like you?
Each therapist brings a unique art to the counseling process.  This art is often known as the authenticity of the counselor.  So, with that in mind, know that even counselors have a unique personality (just like you) and we may not always "fit" right.  That is okay.  "I am who I am, no matter where I am just as you are who you are no matter where you are".   cannot guarantee that you will "like" your therapist all of the time or even part of the time.   What I can guarantee is that we will work to ensure that you have the best "fit" possible with your counselor.
Can I trust you?
My first knee-jerk reaction is to placate you by saying "of course, you can trust me."  After contemplating this issue a bit further, it seems that this is quite indeed a very important aspect of the counselor-client relationship.  I mean, who am I to just assume that you will trust me.  Can you trust me?  Only you can answer that.  I can tell you that I am bound by ethical codes and state/federal regulations to honor your confidentiality (exceptions to this exist).  I can tell you that we will maintain your confidentiality and work in a collaborative way to ensure that you feel comfortable with us.  It is hard to "spill your guts" to a complete stranger, entrusting this person to hold tight you deepest and darkest of secrets.  Yep, that is what we do and we do it in a non-judgmental environment.
Can you help me?
This would be the easy question to answer-of course we can help you.  On the flip side, are you ready to be helped?  We will work collaboratively with you to find the solution to whatever challenges you are facing in your life.  We have specialized training, that makes us especially qualified to help you.  The most important part of the equation is...you.
We wholeheartedly believe that you are the expert in your life.  While this may sound slightly "off", it is true!
